Newcastle managing director Lee Charnley says there will be “no rash decisions” and there is a “collective responsibility” for the club’s poor start to the season.

In an e-mail to the club’s supporters, Charnley said: “There is no hiding from the fact that this has been a very disappointing start to our Premier League campaign, and a painful early exit from a cup competition that we were determined to give everything in this year. We apologise to you for this.

“After six league games, the truth is we have not achieved the points that any of us had hoped and expected we would do.

“None of us can, or will, shirk the responsibility for this situation. Now is the time for collective action, and for us to find solutions to the problems rather than allow ourselves to be consumed by them.

“It is important to state that we bear collective responsibility for our position in the table. Identifying the problems in order to find the solutions is crucial, but we are not in the business of apportioning blame. We are a team, from the boardroom to the boot room, and we will respond like one.

“So we have sat down as a collective – myself with Steve and his coaching team, and Steve with his players – to discuss the concerns and to look for the solutions together.”

The start has piled the pressure on McClaren, whose side have lost their last four games in all competitions and face champions Chelsea and current leaders Manchester City in the next two.

But Charnley said: “Whilst we are all unhappy, we must not panic or make rash decisions. We should not forget we are still relatively early into the season with lots of games to go and points to play for.

“Whilst you may be tired of hearing this, I believe, as we have said from the start, all of this rebuilding and reshaping isn’t something that can happen overnight; it will take time to see the benefit of the changes we made during the summer.”

Facey scored one goal in 10 appearances during a brief spell in the top flight with Bolton, while he has also played for 13 other professional clubs, including West Brom and Hull.

The 35-year-old gradually dropped down the leagues though, becoming paid less and less and he was made bankrupt and had his house repossessed in 2008.

He was arrested in November 2013 after an investigation that focused on matches in League Two and the Conference South.

Facey was asked to approach lower league players and offer them £2,000 each to adversely affect the result of a match.

As a result of that, the betting syndicate he was working for would be able to place large bets on the foreign markets.

No game was actually fixed as a result of these approaches, a factor which helped form the defence of Facey and former Football League player Moses Swaibu, who was also found guilty at Birmingham Crown Court.

Swaibu, who was on Crystal Palace's books as a youngster before going on to play for Lincoln City, received a 16-month prison sentence.

Facey approached more than six players to offer them £2,000 if they were prepared to deliberately lose a match, although no players accepted the offer.

No match was fixed and there was no implication that any other player mentioned in the trial was mentioned in match-fixing.

Judge Mary Stacey said Facey's offences struck "at the very heart of football. You have been a role model, but you have abused that position."

Sentencing both men, Judge Stacey added: "It's about the fans of the teams involved, the families who follow the fortunes of their teams with passion, loyalty and devotion.

"They assume that all the players in those teams will be sharing in that and playing their hardest and best.

"It's also about the employees and staff, groundsmen, coaches, the cleaners, even the owners and share-holders, the match stewards - many of whom will have been volunteers.

"You have betrayed all that trust, all that confidence, and it's like a cancer at the heart of football."
